Happy Canada Day!! We left Winnipeg after yesterdays rest day. A nice easy cycle...enjoying the last day of flatness. Didn't push it as we were not supposed to be able to check in until 3 pm. But Greg got to Prawda early and had everything all set up and ready. Small spaces...where I think we are eating with the neighbours today. haha.
As I said the road was flat. not bad for wind. Mike, Nancy and Dave stopped in Richin for a lunch.
After the first hour on the bike the scenery changed. We said goodbye to the huge fields of crops along the road. Much more wetlands...some very vast...and trees. It is kind of a nice change.
We passed the geographical centre of Canada...however it is not halfway for us as we are adding on a bit more of a tour.
There are also black houseflies and horseflies. To those 8 - 10 that rode with me the last 45 km swarming around my head....BUG OFF. haha. Other than buzzing around...they didn't bother me too much. But Nancy did get a bite, lucky her. They were not at the campsite...so that was great.
Not much for animals other than birds, a dead turtle and a marmot type animal. I told him to get off the road...and he did.
The last 10 km of TCH there was no paved shoulder. I was able to ride along the gravel and find it fine. Able to do 25 + km. Mike rode over half on the shoulder and then went on the small side by the white line as did Nancy and Dave. They are braver than I.
Mike had friends, Margaret and Ian, from Duncan, who were driving from Kenora to Winnipeg and were watching for us bikers. They were in touch with Mike...and because the TCH divides for about 10 + km they ended up turning around and coming from the West to find Mike. They brought him some treats and a pie which we shared after dinner. That was nice for Mike
At camp...we had to wait a bit for showers but they were nice and clean...and hot. Nancy and Dave made a wonderful Steak, Baked Potato, Caesar Salad dinner and finished it off with the Rhubarb, strawberry pie. What a way to start a new month and our last day in Manitoba.
I love that I get texts and messages from my family along the road. It is nice to stay in touch and to see pictures of my granddaughters.
After dinner, a bit of planning by Nancy and then bedtime.
Great day!
