Distance:107 km
Time: 4:03
Speed: 26.5
Ascent: 664 m
Weather: coolish to start then thunder storms
Flats: 0
Bathroom Rating: 8-9
Today started out ovecast and coolish.
We decided to take a backroad out of Thunder Bay which was scenic and quiet.
Really interesting changes in temperature during this part of the ride - really warm and humid to quite cold. This eventually joined highway 11/17 which was fairly busy with very narrow shoulders (about a foot then gravel). At approximately 50 km, Mike, Dave and Nancy stopped east of Pearl in a roadside rest shelter to wait out the thunder storm for about half an hour.
After continuing for 25 km in the pouring rain we found a co-op convenience store with an attached grill for lunch - coffee, hand cut fries, and a burger for Mike. The rain finally stopped once we got on the road again.
Just after lunch Mike had a spill. A driver in another car stopped Nancy and Dave about 4 km down the road and told them about Mike. They rode back and actually talked to him which he has no recollection of. Some nice people who were going towards Thunder Bay saw him and picked him up and took him to the Nipigon hospital where Heidi and Greg met him. He had a few tests and then the Dr there decided to send him to Thunder Bay for a CT scan as his helmet was cracked. He was taken by ambulance and Heidi and Greg followed along and stayed with him through tests and until it was decided to admit him for the night. As it was midnight by this time...it was decided to spend the night in Thunder Bay and then see him in the morning. A long day and worrisome.
